Hebrews 12:1-2
A few weeks ago, I was teaching a class at Taylor University on prayer. When I concluded the class, Heather came up to me and asked if I had ever read anything from E.M. Bounds. I had not. She suggested that perhaps his writings were the best on prayer that she had read.
When I got back to the church, I ordered a copy of his book The Power of Prayer. Yesterday, I read this sort book and was impressed, challenged, and encouraged all the more that prayer is an essential part of what we need to be doing at First Baptist.
I would encourage you to read this book. It is over 100 years old, but reads as if it were written yesterday. It is in the public domain because of its age so you can get it for free. I have attached the file to this blog post.
If you would like to order the book from amazon, click here.
Thanks Heather!
Thanks Wade for passing this along...
by Dan_Wright on 12/05/2008This is indeed a great read!
There is something about the holiness of the believers' lives from a hundred years ago that few modern men (at least the ones in the spotlight) seem to capture.
I believe prayer may well be 90% of the difference.
I remember years ago when I was stationed in Europe spending some time with a missionary. He made an off-hand comment once about the people in small group Bible Study.
He said, "If you're not praying for them regularly, why would you get together with them in the first place."
His own prayers were weighty and deep. His intimacy with the Lord Jesus challenges me to this very day.
This book by Mr. Bounds is a call to that kind of intimacy with the Lord.
The tail end of 2 Peter 1:3 says that the Lord Jesus has called us by His own glory and excellence. The kind of praying Mr. Bounds is advocating is the kind that would have us spend a great deal of time in personal worship, becoming more aware and acquainted with His glory and excellence; not merely petitioning Him for things.
The alternative is having a form of godliness and yet denying its power.
Thanks, Wade, for recommending this.
