This is a sermon preview and event overview for Holy Week and Easter 2025.
"In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, 'Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you...'"
-Excerpt from Luke 24:1-12; 36-49
The women & Peter discover the resurrection, but no Jesus is in sight. Later, when Jesus appears to the disciples, they wrongly assume he is a ghost.
Jesus could have revealed his power and might. He could have performed one of the types of miracles that he had been known for. But what Jesus does instead is surprising. Jesus reveals his very humanity to the disciples. Jesus shook off death, but chose to keep and show his scars. Jesus is hungry and wants to eat. It's through Jesus' life that he empowers the disciples to proclaim the gospel so that others may know that he lives.
Luke's gospel emphasizes remembrance. Jesus taught them how the Old Testament scriptures foretold the Messiah. And now the disciples had lived this good news: that Jesus came to earth, suffered, died, and was raised in three days so that they may all have life. A good life with God that is as big and grand as resurrection, and as beautifully human as healed scars and dinner around a table. Sometimes when we encounter Christ, we treat him like a ghost-a stranger, something too mystical for us. Perhaps when faith feels impossible, we don't need a miracle. The miracle has already happened through Jesus Christ. We need only to "remember" who Jesus is and what he has done.
FBCM looks forward to remembering resurrection with you this Holy Week and Easter! Below is a list of opportunities to gather together and remember in worship this week.
